WONDERWALL / Masamichi Katayama

While the firm is best known for designing A Bathing Ape's "BUSY WORK SHOPs"® in Japan, London, New York and Hong Kong, Wonderwall has extensively built a wide range of retail and commercial spaces throughout Japan. Having founded Wonderwall in 2000, Masamichi Katayama elicits an uninhibited sense of energy even within Japan, where in the world of architecture and interior design is known for being one of the most exhilarating. He has stirred the young generation and drawn attention of the establishment.

His interest in design has always been broad. While respecting conventional and traditional aspects of architecture, he believes in breaking boundaries, and he is on a continual search for new ideas. Hence the name, Wonderwall: a continuous endless journey. Each project is conceived from scratch, rarely repeating details and ideas used in past projects. When designing retail spaces, not only does Katayama address all the elements of the interior, such as lighting, materials, and proportions but he also considers the actual experience of shopping. With restaurants and office spaces, while the actual design may be a crucial element, the interiors are not complete to him without achieving comfort and function. To Katayama, conceiving an interior is about producing a total concept, and his intentions are to create an environment that would touch the subconscious of the consumer and occupant.

Wonderwall Masamichi Katayama Projects, a compilation of Katayama's works, was published collaboratively in 2003 by Frame Publishers of the Netherlands and Birkhauser of Switzerland. The compilation was the first volume in Frame's internationally known MONOGRAPH series to feature the works of a Japanese creator.
